Tim David Banned for IPL 2027 Opener Amid Viral Cigar Video Storm

Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s title celebrations have been overshadowed by controversy as explosive finisher Tim David faces a one-match suspension for the IPL 2027 season opener. The ban comes after David accumulated five demerit points during IPL 2026 — the final strike arriving in the 10th over of the title final against Gujarat Titans, when he aggressively threw an ice bag toward umpire Nitin Menon following a disputed catch decision. It was his third Level 1 breach of Article 2.9 in the season, triggering an automatic suspension under IPL disciplinary rules.

From Incident to Inevitable Ban

David’s earlier offences in Matches 20 and 54 had already placed him on thin ice heading into the final. His flashpoint moment against Menon pushed his demerit tally to five, sealing the ban regardless of which franchise he represents in 2027. RCB now face the prospect of beginning their title defence without one of the most destructive lower-order batters in the competition.

David’s on-field contribution to RCB’s back-to-back triumph was undeniable — 305 runs across 16 matches at a strike rate of 188.27, including a brisk cameo in the final itself.

Cigar Clip Ignites Fresh Debate

Days after the suspension announcement, a video surfaced appearing to show David smoking a cigar during RCB’s post-match celebrations at Narendra Modi Stadium. A photo from teammate Phil Salt appeared to corroborate the clip, yet fans remain divided on its authenticity, with many suspecting AI manipulation. Neither David nor RCB have issued any statement on the matter.

The dual controversy — a ban on one side, an unverified viral video on the other — has firmly placed Tim David under the spotlight as the IPL enters the off-season.
