The Kerala Story enters the 50 crore club

The Kerala Story, which has faced protests and bans, surpassed the 50 crore mark at the domestic box office on the 5th day of its release.

On Tuesday, the picture earned Rs. 11.14 crore. The film’s total earnings in India are now at 56.86 crore.

The Kerala Story, directed by Sudipto Sen, exposes how women from Kerala were forced to convert and recruited by the terror organisation Islamic State (IS).

The movie, released on May 5, has split political discourse. Adah Sharma, Sonia Balani,Yogita Bihani, and Siddhi Idnani appear in the film.

Taran Adarsh, a film trade analyst, tweeted on Wednesday, here’s the tweet.

After the trailer was released, the film sparked debate. Following the film’s release, the Tamil Nadu Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association prohibited screenings in the state as “a precautionary measure” to maintain law and order. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has ordered the film not to be screened to avert “any incident of hatred and violence.”

Several Bollywood celebs have shown their support for the film. In an apparent allusion to the West Bengal government’s decision to prohibit The Kerala Story, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap remarked on Twitter, “You agree with the movie or not, be it propaganda, counter-propaganda, offensive or not, to ban it is just wrong.”

Only the CBFC, according to Shabana Azmi, has the authority to decide whether or not a movie should be distributed. “Those who advocate for the prohibition of #TheKeralaStory are as mistaken as those who advocated for the prohibition of Aamir Khan’s #LaalSinghChaddha.” Nobody has the right to become an extra-constitutional authority once a film has been approved by the Central Board of Film Certification,” she had tweeted.

The Kerala High Court has denied imposing a ban across the state, and the Supreme Court will hear an appeal of the high court’s decision next week.

The film was granted tax-free status in the BJP-ruled states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The MP government was the first to exempt the film from taxation.
