Trump Claims He Stopped India-Pakistan Conflict With Tariff Threat

US President Donald Trump has reiterated his claim that he prevented a potential military conflict between India and Pakistan by threatening both nuclear-armed nations with severe 350 percent tariffs. Speaking at the US-Saudi Investment Forum on Wednesday, Trump stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally called him to confirm India would not pursue military action against Pakistan. According to Trump, this intervention successfully prevented a catastrophic nuclear confrontation that could have affected global security, including potential fallout reaching the United States.

Trump’s Tariff Strategy for Conflict Resolution

Trump elaborated on his approach, explaining that he warned both India and Pakistan against military engagement while threatening to impose a 350 percent tariff on each country and cutting off trade with the United States. He claimed that when both nations protested the tariff threat, he maintained his position, stating he would not permit nuclear weapons use that could result in millions of deaths and nuclear contamination. Trump suggested he offered to remove tariffs and provide favorable trade deals if the countries abandoned military conflict, linking the resolution to ongoing trade negotiations.

India Disputes Trump’s Intervention Claims

Despite Trump’s repeated assertions—which he has made over 60 times—India’s government has consistently denied any third-party involvement in resolving tensions with Pakistan. The Indian administration has not acknowledged Trump’s claimed intervention or Modi’s supposed phone call confirming the ceasefire. This discrepancy between Trump’s account and India’s official position raises questions about the accuracy of his claims regarding the May incident.
