Trump Plans India Visit Next Year to Strengthen US-India Ties

United States President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he plans to visit India next year, describing Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “a great man” and “a friend.” Speaking at a White House press briefing, Trump expressed enthusiasm about strengthening bilateral trade ties with India, suggesting the visit could materialize in 2025.

Trade Negotiations and Russian Oil Concerns

Trump’s positive remarks come amid ongoing trade tensions between the nations. The US has imposed 50 percent tariffs on India over its continued purchases of Russian oil. However, Trump acknowledged that Modi has significantly reduced imports from Russia, describing India’s efforts as “very good.” The President stated that Modi assured him India would curb or halt crude imports from Moscow, demonstrating willingness to address American concerns.

Shift in US-India Relations

This development marks a notable turnaround from August reports suggesting tensions had escalated between Trump and Modi. The New York Times previously reported that Trump had cancelled plans to visit India for the Quad summit later in the year following the tariff imposition. Trump’s latest comments indicate a potential thaw in relations, with both leaders keen to deepen cooperation.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs responded by reiterating that its energy sourcing decisions are based on national interests and consumer welfare. The ministry confirmed ongoing discussions about deepening energy cooperation with the current US Administration.

Trump’s commitment to the India visit reflects broader efforts to maintain strategic partnerships while addressing trade concerns through dialogue rather than escalation.
