Turkish evacuation jet fired at an airbase outside Sudan

A Turkish evacuation aircraft arriving on land at an airbase outside Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, has been shot at, Turkey’s defence ministry says.

No one was hurt, and Turkish evacuation jet arrived safely at Wadi Seidna, where it was being checked.

Sudan’s military accused paramilitary fighters of shooting at the plane and damaging its fuel system. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) refused the allegation, saying it was dedicated to the extended humanitarian ceasefire.

The rival military forces decided to an extension of their truce at midnight local time (22:00 GMT on Thursday) for an extra three days. It has had a limited impact, with military jets continuing to beat RSF positions in Khartoum during the evening.

The earlier peace let thousands of people try to escape to safety while dozens of nations managed evacuations. Turkey’s defence minister said measures would continue to save Turkish nationals from Wadi Seidna and the city of Port Sudan on the Red Sea shore.

Since the conflicts started 14 days back, hundreds of people have been murdered, and tens of thousands forced from their houses.

The war is devastating the capital and its surroundings – which till recently had a population of about 10 million – leaving people without supplies of food, water and fuel.
