Uber, the global technology transport company, has entered into a partnership with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), an initiative supported by the central government to deliver superior services to Indian consumers.

The agreement, announced on February 22, reflects Uber’s commitment to enhancing its offerings in the Indian market.

Uber Commitment to Indian Mobility Needs:

Expressing enthusiasm for the collaboration, Prabhjeet Singh, President of Uber India and South Asia, emphasized the company’s dedication to becoming a comprehensive platform catering to the daily mobility requirements of every Indian.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ONDC marks Uber’s initial stride in this direction.

Leveraging India’s Digital Public Infrastructure:

In a discussion with Nandan Nilekani, co-founder of Infosys, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi highlighted the significance of India’s digital public infrastructure, citing it as a model for global companies and governments to emulate.

Khosrowshahi affirmed Uber’s vision for India, aligning it with ONDC’s mission to democratize digital commerce and serve the diverse mobility needs of the Indian populace.

ONDC’s Perspective on the Partnership with Uber:

T Koshy, Chief of ONDC, underscored the collaborative effort as a pivotal step towards facilitating many mobility solutions for Indian consumers.

As ONDC evolves, with a focus on the Mobility, Transport, and Travel (MTT) sector, partnerships like the one with Uber are instrumental in driving innovation and fostering diverse business models to benefit every Indian.

Ola’s Precedent in Government-Backed Initiatives:

Uber’s announcement follows in the footsteps of its Indian rival, Ola, which previously joined the government-backed initiative to offer food delivery services.

This trend reflects the industry’s recognition of the strategic value in aligning with government initiatives to expand service offerings and cater to evolving consumer demands.
