Ashwin Defends Pakistan’s Usman Tariq Over Bowling Action Controversy

Pakistan’s mystery spinner Usman Tariq found an unexpected ally in former Indian cricketer R Ashwin after facing renewed scrutiny over his bowling action during the T20 World Cup 2026. Tariq delivered an impressive performance against the USA, claiming three wickets for just 27 runs to secure Pakistan’s second victory of the tournament. However, his unconventional bowling style—featuring a visible arm bend and unusual run-up—continued to dominate the conversation.

Ashwin Questions Cricket’s Double Standards

The controversy intensified following a social media video showing fans mocking Tariq’s action during the match. Former cricketer Shreevats Goswami joined critics, comparing the pause in Tariq’s run-up to rule violations in football. This sparked Ashwin’s defense, where he highlighted the inconsistency in cricket regulations. Ashwin questioned why bowlers face stricter restrictions than batters, pointing out that batsmen can switch hit or reverse without notification, yet bowlers cannot change their bowling arm without informing the umpire.

Legal Status and Medical Explanation

Tariq’s action has been officially cleared by the ICC on two separate occasions during Pakistan Super League matches. Former international umpire Anil Choudhary confirmed that Tariq’s action is legal and complies with ICC guidelines. The 27-year-old spinner has previously explained that a medical condition affecting his elbow—characterized by two corners that prevent complete straightening—causes the confusion among spectators.

Despite the ongoing debate, Tariq continues to play professionally across international and T20 league cricket. He is scheduled to face India on February 15 in Colombo, where his performance will likely remain under close observation from both supporters and critics.
