Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Faced Fine After Heated On-Field Altercation

Indian cricket’s 15-year-old rising prodigy, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, has found himself at the center of a disciplinary storm following a heated post-match clash in Dambulla. Match referee Pradeep Jeyapragash recommended a hefty penalty amounting to 50 percent of his match fees after the young opener became involved in a physical altercation on the field. The incident occurred immediately after India A’s dramatic Super Over defeat against Sri Lanka A in the ongoing tri-nation series.

Provocative Taunts Spark Clashes

The tension boiled over when Sri Lankan player Vishen Halambage reportedly directed provocative sledging toward Sooryavanshi as the young batter was walking off the pitch. Halambage allegedly taunted the teenager with remarks telling him to “go home,” referencing that the international stage was not the Indian Premier League (IPL). This triggered a sharp reaction from Sooryavanshi, leading to a fiery exchange of words that escalated into an ugly shoving match before senior players rushed in to separate the duo.

Boards Deliberate Disciplinary Recommendations

Because International Cricket Council (ICC) regulations do not automatically enforce disciplinary sanctions in non-senior ‘A’ team matches, the final decision remains with the respective home boards. While the match referee has officially submitted recommendations to fine both Sooryavanshi and Halambage 50 percent of their earnings, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is still weighing its options on whether to ratify the penalty. India A captain Tilak Varma was also not spared, facing a separate recommended 30 percent fine for his team’s conduct during the high-stakes match.
