Kohli Backs Gill’s Long-Term Captaincy Ahead of ODI Series

Virat Kohli has thrown his weight behind Shubman Gill’s captaincy credentials, expressing confidence that the young leader has what it takes to helm the Indian cricket team for years to come. In an interaction with JioHotstar ahead of India’s upcoming ODI series against the West Indies, Kohli spoke at length about Gill’s growth as a leader and also opened up on how his own approach to batting has evolved.

Gill’s Leadership Qualities Impress Kohli

According to Kohli, Gill is still finding his feet in the captaincy role but already displays the sharpness and temperament needed for the job long-term. He pointed to Gill’s clarity of thought and the intensity he brings to matches as early signs of strong leadership. Kohli also noted how Gill constantly looks for fresh tactical approaches on the field, particularly in setting fields and rotating bowlers to keep opposition batters under pressure — something Kohli views as a hallmark of proactive captaincy.

Kohli’s Evolving Batting Philosophy

Beyond his comments on Gill, Kohli touched on changes in his own game, revealing that he now bats with greater freedom and intends to convert his starts into bigger contributions. He explained that once he gets settled at the crease, he wants to take on more responsibility and push for an additional 30-40 runs per innings rather than settling for a moderate score.

The comments come at a significant time for Indian cricket, with the three-match ODI series against West Indies kicking off on September 27. Gill will lead the side as captain, while both Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been named in the squad, adding experience and firepower to the young captain’s setup as India begins its white-ball campaign.
