Virat Kohli Turns 37: Legend in Twilight Years

Virat Kohli, one of cricket’s greatest modern icons, celebrates his 37th birthday today, marking another milestone in a career that has redefined the sport. Born on November 5, 1988, Kohli has evolved from a promising young talent into a legendary figure whose impact on international cricket remains unparalleled.

Rise of an Icon

Kohli’s journey to stardom began impressively with his Under-19 World Cup victory in 2008, just months before making his international debut. Though his early performances were modest, he steadily climbed the ranks to become the world’s premier batter. By 2016, Kohli had emerged from Sachin Tendulkar’s shadow, establishing himself as “King” Kohli rather than merely “the next Sachin.” His dominance between 2014 and 2020 made him seem untouchable, sparking discussions about the total runs he would accumulate by career’s end.

Challenges and Redemption

The golden period, however, came to an end. Between 2020 and 2021, Kohli endured a form slump, recording no international centuries for two consecutive calendar years. His Test performances deteriorated significantly, leading to questions about his place in the squad by 2024. In response, Kohli retired from T20 Internationals after the T20 World Cup victory in 2024 and concluded his Test career in 2025.

Yet, Kohli’s resilience proved his class is permanent. His ODI form resurged from 2022 onwards, breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s world record for most centuries and fifty-plus scores while chasing. He also claimed second position among top ODI run-scorers and set the record for most runs in a single T20 World Cup edition in 2023.

As Kohli enters the twilight of his career at 37, doubters should proceed cautiously—this legend has repeatedly silenced critics through sheer determination and talent.
