Virginia High school shooting: two dead and five injured; read report

Two people are dead, and five others are injured in a shooting during a Virginia high school graduation event in Richmond, Virginia.

US press reports that the Virginia high school shooting outside the Atria Theater sent students in graduation dresses running for safety.

School officers say the shooting occurred during an event for the Huguenot High School. Another Tuesday’s graduation was delayed, and all classes were revoked on Wednesday.

The victims who were dead were an 18-year-old male who was part of the graduating class and his 36-year-old dad, cops say. Police have not yet revealed their identities.

A 19-year-old person has been taken into detention, according to Interim Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards. He said that cops thought that he knew at least one of the victims.

Another person was seen armed with a firearm and was initially arrested, but police now think he was not involved in the shooting. The attack occurred in Monroe Park after the event ended at the Virginia Commonwealth University campus.

“Is nothing holy any longer?” Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney questioned at a press conference. “A kid should be able to go their graduation and walk at their graduation and relish the achievement with their friends and families,” he stated, calling the attack a “selfish act”.

In a notice sent to students on Tuesday, the university said police were on the scene to investigate the shooting.
