Viswanathan Anand loses for a sixth consecutive time.

India’s Chess legend, Viswanathan Anand, in the Legends of Chess competition, suffered a sixth consecutive defeat.

Former world champion Viswanathan Anand continued his poor run of form in the USD 150,000 Legends of Chess online tournaments as he was defeated 2-3 by Russia’s Ian Nepomniachtchi. This was his sixth consecutive loss in the online competition.

Viswanathan Anand succumbed to a sixth straight defeat:

Anand began the sixth-round match with a draw, as he successfully contained the Russian, matching his attack with proper defense, in a 53-move draw. In the second game, Anand succumbed to defeat in a 34-move win for Nepomniachtchi. The third game again was drawn between the two ace players after 48 moves. In the fourth round, the five-time world champion then fought-back to win the game in 42 moves to push the contest into a tie-breaker, I.e. Armageddon. Nepomniachtchi won the decisive tie-breaker in 41 moves meaning that the 50-year old Indian legend has lost six consecutive matches.

Magnus Carlsen leads the pole position:

In other matches, world champion Magnus Carlsen furthered his winning run to top the standings in the tournament with 17 match points. In the second place on 16 points is Nepomniachtchi followed by compatriot Vladimir Kramnik, who has 12 points. In his debut on the Magnus Carlsen Tour, Anand is way behind the leaders, sitting at ninth position with a lowly 3 points. Legend of Chess is a unique event where six legends aged 40-52, who have been world champions at some point in time in their careers, are facing Magnus Carlsen, Ding Liren, Nepomniachctchi, and Anish Giri. The winner of the event will qualify for the USD 300,000 grand final, scheduled between 9th and 20th August.
