On Thursday, a Russian man was killed by a tiger shark while swimming on a beach in Egypt, shocking onlookers. The event, documented in a horrific video online, depicted when the 23-year-old Russian national was attacked after a shark emerged underwater and seized him.

According to Russia’s TASS news agency, the individual slain was a Russian, but he lived in Egypt full-time and was not a tourist, according to news agency Reuters.

The man’s father, who was there at the time, also witnessed the heinous incident. “We went to the beach to relax,” the father recounted. “My son was attacked by a shark; it all happened in seconds,” he told the Independent.

The heartbreaking video showed the victim’s desperate plea for help as viewers saw the horrible disaster unfold.

The father emphasised his helplessness, claiming that nothing could be done then. “What kind of assistance can you provide?” He was simply dragged under the water,” he explained.

The victim’s father also blamed the occurrence on “evil” fate, despite the beach being declared safe for swimming. “….incredible coincidence…There are ships and yachts in the area. It’s never occurred before…This would just be a cruel fate,” he added.

The tragedy occurred near Hurghada in one of Egypt’s Red Sea resorts. Following the incident, authorities closed a 74-kilometre section of shoreline until Sunday.

According to reports, the country’s environment ministry has captured the shark and is studying it to determine the cause of the assault.

According to research by the Florida Museum of Natural History, there were 57 documented unprovoked cases of shark attacks worldwide in 2022, with the United States reporting the most at 41, followed by Australia. Five of them were killed in the strikes.
