West Bengal 2026 Poll: TMC Leads BJP in Razor-Thin Race

A new opinion poll by Matrize has thrown the spotlight on West Bengal’s upcoming 2026 Assembly elections, revealing a closely fought contest between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the BJP-led alliance. With the TMC holding a slender lead, the survey paints a picture of a state finely divided along political lines.

In terms of vote share, the TMC commands 43% against the BJP alliance’s 41%, with other parties accounting for the remaining 16%. The wafer-thin two-percentage-point gap underscores just how competitive this electoral battle is shaping up to be. Political analysts warn that even minor shifts in voter sentiment could dramatically reshape the final outcome.

Seat Projections Signal a Clear TMC Majority

Despite the narrow vote share margin, seat projections offer TMC a more comfortable cushion. The party is expected to secure between 140 and 160 seats in the 294-seat West Bengal Assembly, comfortably crossing the majority mark of 148. The BJP, however, is projected to win 130–150 seats, ensuring it remains a formidable opposition force rather than a peripheral player.

A Bipolar Contest With Little Room for Smaller Parties

Other parties are forecast to win as few as 6 seats, indicating that West Bengal’s electorate is consolidating sharply around the two dominant forces. This bipolar dynamic is likely to intensify campaigning, with both parties targeting swing constituencies aggressively.

The Matrize poll ultimately signals a high-stakes election where TMC holds the edge, but the BJP’s strong showing guarantees that nothing can be taken for granted as polling day approaches.
