As the leader of a mercenary group that portrays itself as fighting many of the Russian military’s toughest battles in Ukraine, the 62-year-old Prigozhin has now stepped into his most perilous role yet: preaching open revolt against his country’s military leadership.
Prigozhin, the owner of the Kremlin-allied Wagner Group, has escalated months of brutal criticism of Russia’s military approach by calling for armed defiance to remove the defence minister on Friday. Russian security agencies reacted quickly, starting a criminal investigation and urging Prigozhin’s arrest.
Why Yevgeny is against Putin:
Yevgeny stated in an audio clip that Wagner fighters had invaded the southern Russian city of Rostov. He and his troops vowed to destroy everyone who stood in their way.
According to Reuters, Prigozhin previously stated, without providing evidence, that Russia’s military leadership had killed many of his forces in an air attack and pledged to punish them. He insisted that his acts were not a military coup.
