Who is Asaram Bappu:

The religious leader and convicted rapist Asumal Sirumalani Harpalani (born 17 April 1941), better known by his followers as Asaram Bapu, first gained popularity in the early 1970s. 

He is claimed to have started more than 400 ashrams and 40 schools by  2013, both in India and outside of India. 

Bapu is stuck in several legal battles:

Several legal actions have been started against him concerning rape, illegal encroachment, and witness manipulation. 

According to a PTI story, Asaram was accused of sexual assault at his ashram outside of Jodhpur by a young girl from his Chindwara-based gurukul. 

The girl from Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, who attended Asaram’s ashram, was allegedly recommended to travel to Jodhpur for treatment. 

Asaram was detained by Jodhpur Police on August 31, 2013, in response to her accusation against him and has since been imprisoned.

Asaram is currently receiving a life sentence in prison in Jodhpur after Special Judge Madhusudhan Sharma of a special Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe court in Jodhpur found him guilty of raping an underage girl in 2018. 

The leading organisation of Hindu Sants (saints) and Sadhus (ascetics) in India, Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad, pronounced Asaram as a bogus baba in December 2017.
