Jaiswal’s Tea-Time Promise Leads to Unbeaten 173 in Delhi Test

India’s young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal showcased remarkable determination during his unbeaten 173-run knock on Day 1 of the second Test against West Indies in Delhi on Friday. The 23-year-old’s innings was built on a simple yet powerful promise he made to himself and his batting coach during the tea break.

India batting coach Sithanshu Kothak revealed the tea-time conversation that defined Jaiswal’s approach. “The same thing he also told me at tea time – not a single bad shot was played,” Kothak said, adding that Jaiswal was determined to make amends after missing out on a big score in Ahmedabad.

Adapting to Challenging Conditions

Jaiswal’s ability to adjust his aggressive style impressed the coaching staff. Kothak noted that while the new ball was coming onto the bat well, the old ball after 60-65 overs posed challenges. “The way he adapted the shots he decided on that wicket, what he felt with the bounce and pace of the wicket was brilliant,” the coach explained.

This was Jaiswal’s seventh Test century and the fifth time he converted a hundred into a 150-plus score. His measured approach, departing from his naturally aggressive instincts, demonstrated maturity beyond his years.

Determination Over Aggression

Kothak emphasized that Jaiswal’s shot selection and determination were the highlights of his innings. “The most important thing was the determination to play a big innings,” he stated, praising how the opener assessed conditions, bounce, and bowling before targeting specific areas.

Jaiswal’s knock helped India reach 318 for two at stumps, putting the hosts in a commanding position. His ability to curb his natural aggression while maintaining scoring momentum showcased the temperament required for Test cricket’s highest level.
