Yellow alert in Maharashtra; heavy rainfall prediction by IMD

Residents of Mumbai were relieved of the blistering summer heat on Saturday morning when certain regions of Mumbai experienced heavy rainfall.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the southwest monsoon is likely to arrive today. However, the rain caused flooding in various parts of the city.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) tweeted, “Generally cloudy sky with possibility of light to moderate rain in Mumbai city & suburbs.”

The Mumbai Regional Meteorological on Heavy Rainfall:

The Mumbai Regional Meteorological Centre forecasted a gradual increase in rainfall intensity over areas of Maharashtra during the next five days.

“Indication of expected severe weather in the next 5 days,” the forecast stated.

The weather service forecast that the monsoon will arrive in Mumbai by June 24, but no official announcement has been issued.

“Conditions are favourable for the monsoon to move closer to Raigad, Thane, Mumbai, and Palghar.” According to IMD Mumbai, the monsoon is expected to arrive in Mumbai by June 24.

The Southwest Monsoon:

The Southwest Monsoon resumed its path following Cyclone Biparjoy, the longest storm in the Arabian Sea.

On June 23, the Southwest Monsoon advanced into some more parts of Karnataka, Telangana, and the remaining parts of Andhra Pradesh; some parts of Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, the remaining parts of the Northwest Bay of Bengal, and also the remaining parts of Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal; and some parts of Jharkhand, Bihar, and some parts of East Uttar Pradesh, according to the IMD’s daily bulletin.

“Conditions are favourable for further advancement of Southwest Monsoon over some more parts of Chhattisgarh, remaining parts of Jharkhand and Bihar, some parts of East Madhya Pradesh, some parts of Uttar Pradesh, and some parts of Uttarakhand over the next two days,” the last bulletin stated.

IMD on why monsoon got delayed:

The delay in monsoon caused a rainfall deficit in the Southern states; hence, more rainfall is forecast as the southwest monsoon continues to move across the states, according to IMD.

Severe to very severe rain is forecast in Odisha through June 26, with severe rain expected in Bihar and Arunachal Pradesh today.

In northwest India, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh are expected to get heavy to very heavy rainfall through June 27, with periods of severe rainfall over Uttar Pradesh from June 24-26.
