Zelensky Says India ‘Mostly With Us’ Despite Trump’s War Funding Claims

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has pushed back against US President Donald Trump’s characterization of India as a “primary funder” of Russia’s war in Ukraine, asserting that India is “mostly” supporting Ukraine’s cause. The remarks came during a Fox News interview where Zelensky addressed Trump’s recent criticism of both India and China regarding their roles in the ongoing conflict.

Energy Deals Create Diplomatic Challenges

“I think India, mostly, with us. Yes, we have this questions with energy but I think President Trump can manage it,” Zelensky stated, acknowledging the complexities surrounding India’s continued energy purchases from Russia. The Ukrainian leader expressed optimism that India would eventually change its approach toward Russian energy sectors, particularly through stronger European partnerships.

Zelensky emphasized the importance of maintaining diplomatic ties with India, suggesting that closer European-Indian relations could influence New Delhi’s energy policies. “With the Europeans make closer and stronger relations with India. I think we have to do everything not to withdraw India and they will change their attitude to Russian energy sector, I am sure,” he explained.

China Presents Greater Challenge Than India

However, Zelensky drew a stark contrast between India and China, describing Beijing as a more difficult partner to influence. “With China its more difficult because today, it’s not in their interests not to support Russia,” he reasoned, highlighting the different geopolitical calculations driving each nation’s policies.

The Ukrainian President also expressed hope that Trump could potentially change Chinese President Xi Jinping’s stance on the war, noting that “we don’t feel that China wants to finish this war.” These comments reflect Ukraine’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to isolate Russia while building international support for its defense against the invasion.
