Australia to buy five US Virginia class nuclear-powered submarines in 2030

Submarines are a factor of the AUKUS deal with the UK, which may jointly develop a vessel with Australia.

According to four US officers, Australia is predicted to announce it will purchase as many as five US Virginia class nuclear-powered submarines in the 2030s as part of a milestone Pacific security agreement with the United States and the United Kingdom.

Under the so-called AUKUS deal, at least one US submarine will see Australian ports in the coming years. By the late 2030s, one of the officials told the press that a new type of submarine would be made with UK designs and US technology.

The Pacific security deal was first revealed in September 2021 and is also anticipated to include collaboration on hypersonic missiles, artificial intelligence and cyber warfare. It is seen as a try to fight China’s increasing might and strong positioning in the region and has drawn censure from Beijing.

Two of the officers, speaking anonymously, said that after the yearly port visits, the US would send some submarines to Western Australia by around 2027.

In the early 2030s, Australia would purchase three Virginia-class submarines and have the option to buy two extra. Nuclear submarines can remain underwater longer than traditional ones and are challenging to detect.
