Cyclone Biparjoy is hours away from reaching Gujarat’s Kutch coast, where the state is preparing for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall and gale-force winds around 150 kph.
Biparjoy, a severe cyclonic storm, is less than 200 km away and expected to land at Jakhau Port.
A red alert has been issued for the Saurashtra and Kutch coasts. Local authorities bracing for damage to roads, standing crops, and residences, as well as interruptions to power supplies, communication networks, and trains.
74,000 people has been shifted to safe place:
Authorities have also evacuated 74,000 people in risky locations, including residents of approximately 120 villages in the Kutch district between zero and ten kilometres from the seashore.
According to the India Meteorological Department, the intensity of the rain will rise as the storm approaches the shore, with isolated areas in Gujarat’s Kutch, Devbhumi Dwarka, and Jamnagar districts likely to experience exceptionally heavy rain during the next few hours.
According to the IMD’s most recent report at 9 a.m., Biparjoy is around 180 km west-southwest of Jakhau Port. Cyclone is expected to reach the Saurashtra and Kutch beaches between 4 and 8 p.m.
As per reports, Biparjoy can also impact Mandvi and Pakistan’s Karachi coasts.
Flood warning due to Biparjoy:
The sea conditions along and off the coastlines of Saurashtra and Kutch are expected to be high to spectacular till the night of June 15 and, after that, improve.
The Met department issued a storm surge warning for the districts of Kachchh, Devbhumi Dwarka, Porbandar, Jamnagar, and Morbi, stating that the astronomical tide is expected to inundate low-lying regions in these districts during landfall.
The astronomical tides along these districts can reach up to 3-6 metres in some areas.
WR has cancelled trains:
As a precautionary move in light of Cyclone ‘Biparjoy,’ the Western Railway (WR) decided to cancel or shorten the operation of a few more trains on Wednesday.
It cancelled seven more trains, shortened three others, and rerouted four others.
According to the announcement, 76 trains have been cancelled, 36 have been short-terminated, and 31 have been short-originated.
