The Central Government has approved the development of 501 Wayside Amenities (WSAs) along national highways and expressways, with a significant focus on improving infrastructure in Gujarat. Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari informed the Rajya Sabha that the initiative is aimed at enhancing services for travellers on highways, ensuring better facilities for long-distance commuters.

Out of the 501 WSAs that have been approved, 94 are currently operational, with the remaining expected to be developed over the next few years. The government plans to establish over 700 WSAs by 2028-29, underlining its commitment to improving infrastructure for the growing number of highway travellers. Specifically, 56 of these WSAs will be developed in Gujarat, with nine already functional. These amenities are designed to provide essential services like parking spaces, food and beverage outlets, restrooms, medical assistance, and even electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, ensuring a comprehensive and comfortable experience for travellers.

WSAs play an important role in making highways more traveller-friendly by reducing the discomfort that can arise during long journeys. By offering clean, accessible rest areas with necessary services, the project is expected to address issues like fatigue and lack of facilities, which are commonly encountered on longer road trips. The inclusion of EV charging stations reflects the government’s push toward a more sustainable and eco-friendly transport infrastructure, aligning with India’s goals of reducing carbon emissions and promoting electric mobility.

Gadkari highlighted the importance of this initiative in improving the highway experience for people across the country. The development of these WSAs is not only expected to provide comfort to travellers but will also stimulate local economies by creating employment opportunities at these locations.
