Congress won Karnataka elections with the highest number of votes

After 34 years, the Congress Party won the Karnataka assembly elections in 2023 with the highest vote share and seats.

Even while the votes were counted, political activist Yogendra Yadav declared that this election was the biggest win for “any party in Karnataka” since 1989, when the Congress won 178 seats with a vote share of 43.76 per cent.

According to the election commission website at the time of publication, the party has well beyond the 125-seat threshold.

According to data shared by Yadav on Twitter, the Congress won around 132 seats with a vote share of 40.84 per cent in 1999, followed by 122 seats with a vote share of 36.6 per cent in 2013.

JDS won 115 seats in 1994, with a vote percentage of 33.54 per cent. The BJP won around 110 seats in 2008 with a vote share of 36.86 %, followed by 104 seats in 2018 with a vote share of 36.3 per cent. In 2004, the BJP won 79 seats with a vote share of 28.33%.

Massive celebrations occurred at the Congress offices as early polls indicated that the party had won the state. Congress had won 126 seats and was leading in 10 more at the time of publication.

“I assured Sonia Gandhiji, Rahul Gandhiji, and Priyanka Gandhiji, as well as (Congress chief) Mallikarjun Khargeji, I will deliver Karnataka to the fold,” an emotional DK Shivakumar declared shortly after the BJP conceded defeat.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who has been critical of Modi’s leadership, described the party’s victory as “people’s strength over crony capitalism.”
