Jurel Defends Jaiswal Over Head-Butt Incident With Fernando

Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel has come out in support of teammate Yashasvi Jaiswal, explaining that the young opener’s on-field clash with Sri Lankan pacer Asitha Fernando during the second Test in Colombo was triggered by provocation rather than aggression on Jaiswal’s part. Speaking to former cricketer Aakash Chopra on YouTube, Jurel said Jaiswal was walking back to the pavilion after his dismissal when he turned around following what he described as abusive remarks from Fernando.

What Jurel Said About the Incident

According to Jurel, Jaiswal is not someone who instigates confrontations on the field and has always maintained his composure while batting. Jurel added that Jaiswal himself accepted a bowler celebrating a wicket with normal aggression, but drew the line at being abused personally, which is what led to the heated exchange between the two players.

The incident occurred on the opening day of the Colombo Test in August, when tempers flared between Jaiswal and Fernando during India’s innings. Match officials subsequently found both players guilty of a breach under the ICC’s code of conduct.

Punishment and Team’s Stance on Sledging

Both Jaiswal and Fernando were fined 25 per cent of their match fees and handed one demerit point each for inappropriate physical contact under Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct. Several observers felt Jaiswal got away with a relatively lenient penalty given the severity of the altercation.

Jurel also touched on the Indian team’s broader approach to sledging, stating that no player in the current setup stays silent when targeted verbally, reflecting a collective refusal to back down from on-field confrontations.

Jaiswal, a regular in India’s Test line-up, is now eyeing a firmer place in the ODI squad as he builds a case for the 2027 World Cup, having been named in India’s squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against the West Indies.
