Introduction:

A gynecologist based in Vadodara, Gujarat, made headlines after sharing on social media that he refused to treat a pregnant patient in her thirties who declined to undergo crucial tests.

Dr. Rajesh Parikh emphasized the importance of doctors’ rights to refuse treatment and the consequences of patients attempting to dictate medical decisions.

Doctor’s Statement:

Dr. Parikh asserted that patients have the right to choose their doctors, but doctors also have the right to refuse treatment, except in emergencies.

He disclosed that he turned away a pregnant patient who refused essential tests, such as the NT scan and double marker test, based on advice from non-medical sources.

Despite attempts to reason with the patient, Dr. Parikh advised her to seek another caregiver who would accommodate her misconceptions.

Importance of Professional Autonomy:

As a doctor, especially in obstetrics, Dr. Parikh stressed the importance of not allowing patients to dictate treatment or management decisions.

He warned of potential legal consequences for doctors who acquiesce to patient demands, emphasizing the need for clear communication and documentation of refusal for future protection.

Conclusion:

Dr. Parikh’s firm stance underscores the importance of upholding medical standards and ethics, even in the face of patient resistance.

As discussions surrounding patient-doctor relationships continue, cases like these serve as valuable reminders of the complexities inherent in healthcare decision-making.
