On Friday, former US President Donald Trump shared a post on Facebook as his return to the social media platform after being banned for over a year.
Facebook and Instagram owner Meta Platforms declared on January 25 that it would allow Trump access to his accounts again, arguing that the public should be able to hear from politicians but that Trump would face “heightened penalties” for continuing to break its rules.
As rioters stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, the former president was suspended for applauding them.
Even after his reinstatement, whether Donald Trump would post on the accounts was still unknown.
Facebook and Instagram are important platforms for voter outreach and financing, and they may help Trump, who plans to run for president again in 2024. As of February 9, Trump has 34 million Facebook fans and 23 million Instagram followers.
In January, a Trump campaign representative told Fox News Digital that the return to Facebook “would be a key tool for the 2024 campaign to contact voters.”
Late in 2021, Trump launched Truth Social, a social media network he used to communicate with his supporters while barred from Twitter and Meta.
Those who oppose his comeback use Trump’s posts on Truth Social to argue that he still poses the same risk that prompted Meta to suspend him in the 1st place.

According to a report from the liberal advocacy group Responsible Tech in December, over 350 of his posts on Truth Social would have violated Facebook’s policies, including ones that promoted bogus accusations of election fraud and QAnon conspiracy theories.
In a blog post, Meta claimed to have modified its guidelines for controlling prominent people during tumultuous periods. According to the protocol, Meta stated it might limit the circulation of a Trump post if it “contributes to the sort of risk that emerged on January 6” but does not break its rules.
Even if people follow Trump, a limitation will prevent their feeds from receiving the postings, Meta explained. The posts would still be accessible on Trump’s profile.
Additionally, the corporation said it could stop the posts from being reposted or used as sponsored advertisements.
Trump’s reassignment, according to ad buyers who previously spoke to Reuters, was unlikely to alter how businesses use the platforms for advertising. Still, it confirmed long-standing worries about how Meta blocks advertisements from appearing next to particular material.
