Meta to Establish First Data Centre in India at Reliance Campus

Meta, formerly known as Facebook, is set to establish its first data centre in India at the Reliance Industries campus in Chennai, according to Economic Times. This move signifies Meta’s commitment to localizing its operations and services in the Indian market.

Meta Enhancing Data Processing Capabilities:

The data center in India will enable Meta to operate four to five nodes across multiple locations in the country, facilitating faster data processing. Currently, data from Indian users is serviced at Meta’s data center in Singapore, but a local center will enhance efficiency and reduce transmission costs.

The establishment of a data centre in India will improve Meta’s operational efficiency and enhance user experience.

Localizing advertisements and content generation will reduce latency and more tailored AI-driven recommendations for Indian users.

Reliance Industries Tamil Nadu Campus:

The proposed data center will be situated at Reliance Industries’ 10-acre campus in Chennai’s Ambattur Industrial Estate. This campus, a joint venture between Brookfield Asset Management, Reliance Industries, and Digital Realty, boasts a significant IT load capacity of up to 100 megawatts.

The collaboration between Brookfield, Reliance Industries, and Digital Realty underscores the robust infrastructure capabilities of the Tamil Nadu campus. This partnership gives Meta a reliable foundation for establishing its data center operations in India.

Potential Expansion Plans by Meta:

Industry experts, such as Neil Shah from Counterpoint Research, anticipate Meta’s expansion into other key regions in India, including Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Delhi NCR. These greenfield data centers would cater to Meta’s growing infrastructure requirements and user base in the country.

Localizing user-generated content and advertisements aligns with Meta’s strategic goals to tap into India’s vast market potential. With over 850 million smartphone users, India presents significant opportunities for Meta to tailor its services and content to local preferences, enhancing engagement and driving growth.
