Dubai crown prince honours hero pilot Smit Machchhar.

Sheikh Hamdan praises Indian captain who saved 172 lives after mid-flight attack.

In a moving gesture of solidarity, Dubai’s Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum visited Captain Smit Machchhar, the Indian pilot hailed as a hero after averting a catastrophic mid-air tragedy. Machchhar, who is currently recovering in a Dubai hospital, was attacked by his co-pilot during a flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Despite sustaining severe injuries, his quick thinking and courage saved 172 passengers and crew members.

The Crown Prince personally met Machchhar, offered words of gratitude, and embraced him. Later, he shared his admiration on social media, writing that the pilot embodies the UAE’s values of compassion, peace, and resilience. “From us, and from the leadership of the nation, he has our full appreciation and praise. We are proud that he is part of our team… part of the story of our nation,” Sheikh Hamdan stated.

The incident unfolded when co-pilot Hamam Alhammami, an Omani national, suddenly attacked Machchhar with a cockpit crash axe in an apparent attempt to down the aircraft. As the plane plunged thousands of feet, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, alerting passengers who rushed in to overpower the attacker. Off-duty pilots on board then stabilized the aircraft and landed it safely.

Global leaders including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and U.S. President Donald Trump have praised Machchhar’s bravery. Trump described him as a “hero” who acted with remarkable strength despite being “in very bad shape.”

Investigations into Alhammami’s motives are ongoing. Reports suggest he had previously been barred from flying in Oman due to concerns about radical ideology. The UAE authorities are probing whether the attack was linked to terrorist activity.

Meanwhile, Machchhar’s family has expressed pride in his resilience. His father, Bhupendra Machchhar, acknowledged that recovery will be long but emphasized his son’s inner strength. The Indian Embassy in the UAE confirmed that Captain Machchhar is under excellent medical care and assured continued support for his recovery.

This extraordinary act of courage has not only saved lives but also reinforced the values of unity and humanity. Captain Machchhar’s heroism stands as a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable adversity.
