The first Grand Slam action by Novak Djokovic since his disqualification in the U.S. The Open was running as smoothly as possible.
In a 6-0, 6-2, 6-3 win over 80th ranked Mikael Ymer of Sweden under a closed roof at Court Philippe Chatrier, the French Open’s No. 1 seed was hardly moved at all. Djokovic broke Ymer 9 times and ended up in overall winners with a 32-12 margin.
Djokovic was knocked out of his fourth-round U.S. match. Open this month after dropping a game for unintentionally hitting a line judge in the throat with a ball hit in frustration.
There was no need to express a great deal of indignation towards Ymer.In her first-round match at Roland Garros, Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin had to overcome a three-set test.
After a rain delay before the 2nd set, the fourth-seeded Kenin struggled a little before the second set but returned with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win in almost two hours against 125th-ranked Liudmila Samsonova.
Liudmila is 0-3 in her career Grand Slam matches. At a major tournament one year ago in Paris, Kenin made her first big breakthrough. On the way to her fourth-round debut, she defeated Serena Williams.
Kenin, 21, became Melbourne’s youngest champion this year as Maria Sharapova was 20 in 2008. Danish teenager Clara Tauson achieved her first tour-level win by defeating the U.S. Open semifinalist Jennifer Brady in the first round, 6-4, 3-6, 9-7.
In the final set, the 17-year old Tauson came back from a 4-2 deficit and saved two match points.
Last year, Tauson won the junior Australian Open title.
Also, Matteo Berrettini won on the outside courts before rain suspended play. The U.S. 2019 Vasek Pospisil 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 defeated the Open semifinalist. Second-seeded Karolina Pliskova advanced to the 2nd round by beating Mayar Sherif 6-7 (9), 6-2, 6-4.
The first Egyptian player to qualify for the main draw at Roland Garros was Sherif. In the seventh game of the third set, she saved five breakpoints. On Court Philippe Chatrier, Pliskova eventually broke and then kept to love for a 5-3 lead.
On her first match point, Pliskova clinched victory with an ace. At Roland Garros in 2017, the former top-ranked player reached the semifinals and next faces Jelena Ostapenko. The big-hitting Latvian player won that year’s French Open.
