PM Modi hails 44-year wait-ending triumph.

India’s women’s hockey team scripted a historic chapter at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, clinching gold after a 44-year wait with a hard-fought 1-0 win over defending champions China. The win marked India’s second-ever women’s hockey gold at the Games—the first in 1982—and secured direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, amplifying the achievement’s significance.

The final blended attacking flair with defensive resilience. Lalremsiami gave India the perfect start in the 10th minute with a powerful tomahawk strike, putting the team ahead early. From then on, China mounted relentless pressure, but India’s defence held firm. The defining moment came when veteran goalkeeper Savita Punia produced a stunning save from a Chinese penalty stroke, preserving India’s slender lead and inspiring confidence across the squad.

As the match progressed, China continued to push for an equaliser, but India’s composure and discipline ensured the scoreline remained intact. The closing stages tested the players’ nerves, yet their determination carried them through to a landmark victory that will be remembered for generations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the team on social media, calling the triumph “a very special moment for Indian Hockey.” He praised the players’ skill, teamwork, and perseverance, noting that their success had brought immense joy to the nation. Modi also hoped this achievement would boost hockey’s popularity across India and encourage young athletes to pursue the sport with passion.

The victory adds another proud chapter to India’s sporting history. Since their debut gold in 1982, the women’s team had come close twice- finishing runners-up in 1998 and 2018 but fell short against South Korea and Japan. This time, however, they overcame the odds to reclaim the top spot.

China settled for silver, while Japan defeated South Korea to secure bronze. For India, the gold medal represents not just a sporting triumph but also resilience, teamwork, and national pride. With Olympic qualification assured, the team now looks ahead to building on this momentum and continuing their journey on the global stage.
