Shreyas Iyer Overtakes MS Dhoni With Record 37th 200-Plus Total

India captain Shreyas Iyer has surpassed MS Dhoni’s T20I captaincy record after leading his side to a 37th total of 200 or more. The milestone came in Indore on October 11, where India beat West Indies by 14 runs in the third T20I and took a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.

Abhishek Sharma Sets the Platform

India posted 223 in 20 overs, built around a blistering 69 off 30 balls from Abhishek Sharma, which included six fours and five sixes. Ishan Kishan provided useful support at the other end, while Prince Yadav’s late cameo helped the hosts push the total beyond 220.

West Indies were asked to chase 224 and finished on 209 for seven, falling 14 runs short. Arshdeep Singh led the bowling attack with figures of 3/44 from his four overs. Contributions from the lower order and disciplined death bowling proved vital in defending a target that was challenged late.

Iyer’s Selfless Leadership

Beyond the scoreboard, Iyer’s captaincy has drawn attention for its preparation and tactical awareness. He is willing to change his own batting position to suit the team’s needs rather than chase personal milestones. He stays calm under pressure, takes responsibility in tough moments and backs teammates after mistakes. Head coach Gautam Gambhir has said that selflessness is the first quality of a good leader.

The series began in Lucknow on October 6, where India chased 172 in just 14.4 overs. Iyer scored an unbeaten 102 off 43 balls, and debutant Naman Dhir took 3/31. West Indies won the second T20I on October 9, briefly halting India’s momentum, but the hosts bounced back in Indore. With two matches still to play, India now hold the advantage and will look to seal the series.
