Odisha train crash: At least 238 people are dead, and 650 are injured in a collision involving three trains in India’s eastern Odisha region, officials confirm.

One passenger train crashed, and its coaches fell onto the adjoining track, where they were hit by an incoming train on Friday night.

Odisha train crash kills at least 230:

Indian Railways stated the two trains involved were the Coromandel Express and the Howrah Superfast Express. Officers say it is India’s most deadly train crash this century.

Sudhanshu Sarangi, chief general of Odisha Fire Services, had previously said that the casualty toll was at 288, but officials subsequently said 238 people had died. But the toll is predicted to increase as many passengers are still believed to be trapped in the wreck, and on Saturday morning, units were working hard to reach them.

The state’s chief secretary Pradeep Jena stated that almost 200 ambulances and hundreds of doctors, nurses and rescue units were sent to the scene in the Balasore district.

Drone video shot at the accident spot showed some coaches had separated from the train and tipped on the side – several others were overturned.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw is at the place of the casualty, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is anticipated to visit the injured in the hospital on Saturday.

One male survivor stated that “10 to 15 people fell on me when the accident occurred, and everything went haywire. I was at the bottom of the stack.”

“I got injured in my hand and the back of my neck. When I came out of the train seats, I saw someone had lost their hand and leg, while someone’s face was contorted,” the survivor told India’s ANI press agency.

A day of mourning has been declared in the state.
