India Approves Largest Defence Deal for 156 LCH Helicopters

In a significant step towards bolstering India’s defense capabilities, the government has approved its largest-ever defense procurement deal, purchasing 156 indigenous Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) ‘Prachand’ from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). This deal, worth ₹45,000 crore, was cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) during its meeting on Friday, marking a historic milestone in the country’s efforts to strengthen its defense infrastructure and increase indigenous production under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

This procurement is set to provide a major boost to India’s self-reliance in defense manufacturing, as the helicopters will be built at HAL’s production facilities in Bengaluru and Tumkur in Karnataka. The deal will see the Indian Army receiving 90 helicopters, while the Indian Air Force (IAF) will get 60. These combat helicopters, capable of operating at high altitudes and in challenging terrains, are expected to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of both the Army and the Air Force.

The LCH Prachand is uniquely designed to operate in high-altitude regions, making it ideal for warfare in areas such as the Himalayas, where it can take off and land at altitudes between 5,000 and 16,400 feet. This capability makes it particularly well-suited for the strategic defense needs in the northern and eastern borders. The helicopters are equipped with cutting-edge features, including the ability to fire both air-to-ground and air-to-air missiles, providing them with great operational flexibility. Moreover, the integration of advanced data chips enables network-centric operations, allowing for improved coordination and tactical advantage in modern warfare scenarios.

The Prachand helicopter has already been formally inducted into the IAF in October 2022, and its successful performance has cemented its position as a crucial asset for the country’s aerial combat strategy. The new order not only strengthens the capabilities of the Indian military but also underscores the growing role of HAL in India’s defense modernization. HAL’s commitment to innovation and self-reliance is further evident as it continues to contribute significantly to the country’s defense sector.

The deal is also a reflection of India’s broader efforts to prioritize indigenous defense production. The latest LCH procurement adds to India’s already impressive defense acquisition record, which includes ₹2.09 lakh crore worth of defense contracts signed this financial year. This focus on increasing local defense production aligns with the government’s vision to reduce dependency on foreign defense suppliers and ensure that India’s military is equipped with state-of-the-art, homegrown technology.

In conclusion, the approval of the 156 LCH Prachand helicopters represents a giant leap in India’s defense modernization journey. By investing in indigenous capabilities, India is not only strengthening its military but also ensuring that its defense needs are met with locally developed and produced technologies. This deal signifies a key turning point in the nation’s pursuit of self-reliance and strategic autonomy in defense matters.
