Green Giant MSC Turkiye Arrives at Adani’s Vizhinjam Port

MSC Turkiye, World’s Largest Green Cargo Ship, Docks at Adani’s Vizhinjam Port

In a significant milestone for India’s maritime infrastructure, the world’s largest eco-friendly container ship, MSC Turkiye, docked at Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala. Operated by the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the vessel boasts cutting-edge green technology and impressive capacity, highlighting Vizhinjam Port’s readiness for next-gen shipping.

Measuring 399.9 metres long, 61.3 metres wide, with a depth of 33.5 metres, MSC Turkiye can carry up to 24,346 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), making it one of the largest container ships ever constructed.

Managed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd, Vizhinjam Port is India’s first trans-shipment hub, strategically located just 10 nautical miles from the key east-west international shipping route. This allows the port to receive ultra-large vessels directly, without the need for feeder ships, strengthening India’s position in global maritime logistics.

A green container ship like the MSC Turkiye is built to minimise environmental impact. These vessels often operate on cleaner fuels such as LNG or biofuels, include energy-efficient engines, and integrate emission-reducing technologies like scrubbers and exhaust filters. Some also incorporate electric systems for use while docked, or renewable energy sources like solar panels and wind-assist sails to reduce fossil fuel use.

Though specific green features of the MSC Turkiye haven’t been disclosed, its classification as an eco-friendly ship underlines the maritime industry’s growing push towards sustainability and low-carbon shipping.

Welcoming such a massive and modern vessel underscores the advanced capabilities of Vizhinjam Port. Adani Ports described the facility as “world-class” and “future-ready,” equipped to handle modern cargo demands and contribute to cleaner global trade.

In a recent update, Adani Ports revealed that Vizhinjam handled over 100,000 TEUs in March 2025, marking a new high in activity. Across all its ports, the company processed a record 41.5 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo in the same month, driven by a 19% rise in container traffic and growth in liquid and gas cargo.

While Adani Ports’ stock closed 0.32% higher at ₹1,135 in the last trading session, it has faced recent volatility, down over 16% in the past year. Still, it remains a long-term outperformer with a 350% gain over five years.

As global shipping moves toward greener standards, the docking of MSC Turkiye signals that Vizhinjam is not just ready for the future—it’s already part of it.
