KL Rahul, Shubman Gill Create 61-Year-Old Test Record

KL Rahul and Shubman Gill etched their names in cricket history books on Friday, October 3, 2025, during the second day of the first Test match between India and West Indies at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium. The duo achieved a rare milestone that had not been witnessed in Test cricket for over six decades.

The Indian batting pair became only the second in Test cricket history to be dismissed for exactly 50 and 100 runs in the same innings. This remarkable feat was last accomplished 61 years ago, also by Indian batsmen, making it the first occurrence in the 21st century.

Historic Partnership Strengthens India’s Position

Walking out to bat on Day 2, captain Shubman Gill and KL Rahul forged a crucial 98-run partnership for the third wicket, consolidating India’s dominant position. Gill departed first, scoring exactly 50 runs off 100 deliveries when his reverse sweep attempt against opposition captain Roston Chase proved unsuccessful.

Rahul continued his patient innings, reaching his century just before the lunch break. However, his knock ended immediately after the milestone, dismissed by Jomel Warrican for precisely 100 runs from 197 balls.

Rare Achievement Mirrors 1964 Feat

The only previous instance of batsmen being dismissed for 50 and 100 in the same Test innings occurred in 1964 at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium. Motganhalli Jaisimha (50) and Budhi Kunderan (100) had accomplished this feat against England during a match that ended in a draw.

India maintained their commanding position throughout Day 2, with Dhruv Jurel and Ravindra Jadeja also scoring centuries. The hosts finished at 448-5, establishing a substantial 286-run lead over the West Indies.
