Lightning Strikes Claim Lives of 2 in Surendranagar Gujarat

At least two women lost their lives after being struck by lightning during an unseasonal rain in Gujarat’s Surendranagar district on Wednesday. The identities of the deceased have not yet been confirmed. 

This tragic incident is part of a series of lightning strikes that have claimed the lives of three women in the district over the past two days.

Animal Casualties in Surendranagar lightning:

In addition to the human fatalities, six to seven animals were also reported dead due to lightning strikes in different parts of the Surendranagar district. The persistent lightning strikes have caused significant distress and loss in the region.

Severe Weather in Amreli District:

The Amreli district experienced storm-like conditions with strong winds causing considerable damage. The high winds blew off the tin roofs of several houses, exacerbating the impact of the unseasonal weather.

Weather Forecast and Government Response:

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted continued rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in various regions, including Gujarat, over the next few days. Specific forecasts include:

  • 15th-17th May: Isolated light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds (40-60 km/h) expected over Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathawada.
  • 15th-16th May: Similar conditions are expected over Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and the Gujarat region.

Government Actions:

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has directed Sunaina Tomar, the in-charge Chief Secretary, to assess the situation in response to the adverse weather conditions. 

Strong winds have disrupted electricity supply to approximately 250 villages, highlighting the need for swift governmental action to manage the impact of the severe weather.
