Manipur violence: watch house set on fire

On Monday, culprits set abandoned houses on fire in Imphal, the hill state of Manipur, according to reports of new violent acts.

The New Lambulane neighbourhood was the scene of house fires, as per a video released by the news agency ANI.

According to the news agency PTI, no casualties were registered due to the arson.

A few persons suffered minor injuries due to the force used by the nearby army men who hurried to the site to disperse the mob. The locals protested the occurrence by setting tyres on fire on the road.

Curfew hours in Imphal East district, which had previously been lifted, were tightened due to the incident.

An ICI Church on Imphal’s Chassad Avenue, according to the Delhi branch of the Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO), was “targeted and burned down by Meitei mobs.”

This comes after ethnic tensions were sparked by a “Tribal Solidarity March” on May 3 against the Meitei community’s petition to be added to the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list.

The N Biren Singh-led BJP government’s intention to provide ST status to the Hindu Meitei people, who also comprise the majority of the state’s population, has been contested by the Christian Kuki and Naga minority.

Over 70 people were killed in the unrest, and 10,000 army and paramilitary men had to be sent to restore order in the northeastern state.
