A sign of peace in Imphal valley after three days of chaos

After three days of violent protests in various regions of ethnically divided Manipur over the killing of two Meitei students who went missing in July, the atmosphere in Imphal Valley remained mostly calm on Friday.

People raced to buy necessities on Friday when officials relaxed curfew in Imphal East and Imphal West districts from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. On Saturday, the administration also eased the curfew in both districts from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Public movement is back Imphal Valley:

“The restriction on general public movement outside their residences is hereby lifted…from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m.” The waiver does not cover “any gathering/sit-in protests/rally etc. without prior approval from the competent authority,” according to an Imphal West district administration order.

The deputy commissioner of Imphal East district issued a similar order. On Saturday, district authorities in Bishnupur and Churachandpur reduced the curfew from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Anusuiya Uikey pays visit:

Meanwhile, Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey visited the families of the two Meitei students allegedly kidnapped and killed.

“The governor consoled the parents of the two students and provided water to the mothers who had been fasting for several days,” stated the Raj Bhavan in a statement.

A new round of Violence:

On September 26, a new outbreak of Violence erupted in Imphal, a day after photographs of the bodies of two Meitei students who went missing on July 6 went viral on social media.

Since May 3, when ethnic conflicts between the Meitei and Kuki clans started, at least 176 people have been killed in Manipur.

Though no violent protests were reported on Friday, students at Central Agricultural University in Imphal conducted a sit-in in demand of justice for the two students. Officials reported similar sit-in protests in Imphal’s Khurai and Keishampat regions.
