Here’s everything you want to know about women’s reservation bill

After President Droupadi Murmu granted her approval of the women’s reservation bill, Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam became law in India.

Currently, 33% of Lok Sabha and state assembly seats will be reserved for women. The reserve, however, will go into effect with the new census and delimitation.

The women’s reservation bill was enacted by the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha in a special session of Parliament this month, marking a historic victory for the Indian Parliament as it transitioned to the new Parliament building on September 19.

AIMIM was against the women’s reservation bill:

AIMIM is against the women’s reservation bill, claiming that it will primarily benefit Savarna women because there is no provision for Muslim women representatives.

The Congress, too, sought OBC reservation and questioned how long it would take to execute even after it was passed in Parliament and approved by the President.

“…the provisions of the Constitution relating to the reservation of seats for women in the House of the People, the Legislative Assembly of a state, and the Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi shall come into effect after an exercise of delimitation is undertaken for this purpose and after the relevant figures for the first census taken after the commencement of the Constitution Act, 2023 have been published, and shall cease to affect the expiration of the Constitution Act, 2023.”
