According to three embassy staff, the Afghan embassy in India has ceased all activities after the ambassador and other senior diplomats fled to Europe and the United States, where they have sought asylum.

Indian embassy closed in Kabul:

Although India does not recognize the Taliban government and closed its embassy in Kabul after the Taliban took control in 2021, New Delhi has allowed the ambassador and mission staff selected by the Western-backed government of ousted Afghan President Ashraf Ghani to issue visas as well as handle trade matters.

According to the authorities, at least five Afghan diplomats have departed India. According to one of the Afghan officials, the Indian government would now take over the diplomatic compound as a caretaker.

When asked about the situation, an Indian foreign ministry official in New Delhi indicated they were looking into it but provided no further details.

Taliban officials in Kabul could not be reached for comment.

Afghan embassy in India shut:

India is one of a dozen countries operating a tiny mission in Kabul to help with trade, humanitarian aid, and medical assistance.

Bilateral trade reached $1.5 billion in 2019-2020 but dropped dramatically after the Taliban administration gained power.

Earlier this month, hundreds of Afghan college students residing in India protested in New Delhi, despite their student visas’ expiration, urging the Indian authorities to extend their stay.
