Metaverse may pose a “existential threat” to Facebook

Meta (formerly Facebook) is aware that virtual authenticity can be a “toxic environment,” especially for women also minorities, and that Metaverse will represent an “existential threat” to Facebook. 

According to a Financial Times report citing internal records from Meta-CTO  Andrew Bosworth, Facebook aims for “Disney’s level of virtual security” in its virtual world. However, Bosworth acknowledged that it is nearly impossible to moderate “to some extent” the way consumers talk and behave, the FT report said Friday.

Bosworth later published a blog post saying that technology that opens up new possibilities can also be used to the detriment of. And “we need to consider this when designing, replicating and commercializing products.”

“Digital harassment is nothing new, and we and others in the industry have been working on it for years. This work continues and will most likely never be complete. It continues to evolve, although its meaning remains constant. This is a challenging task,” he said.

Meta has pledged $50 million to investigate the practical and ethical issues surrounding its Metaverse.

Now the social network plans to spend at least $10 billion on the meta-universe project this year. And amend its financial statements to split revenue between Facebook Reality Labs and its family of apps.

Metaverse will be a common 3D virtual space where everyone can share exciting experiences with others. Even when you can’t be with in person also do things together that you couldn’t in the physical world.

“Of course, there are some stop to what we can do. For example, we can’t record all that happens in VR indefinitely, it will invade people’s privacy. And at some point, the headphones will run out of memory and power,” said Bosworth.
