Tamil Nadu Minister of Agriculture R Doraikannu, who was struggling against Covid-19, expired, a private hospital said that on Sunday.

The 72-year-old Minister breathed his final late Saturday evening, Dr Aravdindan Selvaraj, Executive Director of Kauvery Hospital, said in a medical newsletter.

“We declare the tragic death of the Honorable Minister of Agriculture, R Doraikkannu, with great sorrow,” he said on Saturday at 11.15 pm. 

“Throughout this tough time, our thoughts and prayers remain with the grieving families,” he said.

After being transferred from a government medical college hospital in Villupuram on October 13, Doraikkannu was seeking treatment here, in which he was admitted since he reported discomfort.

Governor Banwarilal Purohit of Tamil Nadu condoned Daoraikkannu’s death and said he was shocked to hear of the minister’s demise.

 

Governor Banwarilal Purohit in his condolence message:

“He managed the Ministry of Agriculture with absolute devotion and carved his powerful signature. Doraikkannu” was renowned for his simplicity, humbleness, straightforwardness, administration skills, and contribution to the welfare of the farming community.

 His untimely death is an irreparable disappointment to the people of Tamil Nadu including to the AIADMK party in particular,’ he said in his message of condolence.

Purohit expressed to the bereaved members of the family his sincere condolences and said that he prayed to the Almighty God to bless his soul in peace.

In 2006, 2011, and 2016, Doraikkannu was elected to the Tamil Nadu Assembly from Papanasam in Thanjavur district, with him being inducted into the cabinet by the late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in 2016.

The Minister’s health had deterioration on Sunday:

Last Sunday, the minister’s health experienced a drastic decline in critical functions. On Monday, the hospital said the minister was being cared for extreme Covid-19 pneumonia and its symptoms.

A 90% lung presence vis-a-vis the disease was seen by a CT scan and ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), as well as a ventilator, were placed on.

On 13 October, when he was on the way to attend a funeral of Davusayammal, the mother of Chief Minister K Palaniswami, who have died in Salem at the age of 93, the minister encountered uneasiness.

Doraikkannu, who was riding in his car, was hurried to the Villupuram government medical college hospital and was moved the same day from there to the Kauvery hospital.
