During the visit, the Japanese prime minister is expected to reveal his plan for a “free and open Indo-Pacific,” concentrating on India’s increasingly significant role in the area. In the background of China’s growing military power, the evolving position in the Indo-Pacific is also probably to figure in the wide-ranging conversations between PM Modi and PM Kishida.

The Japanese prime minister’s trip is expected to be around 27 hours. He is expected to reveal his ‘Free and Open Indo-Pacific Plan for Peace’ during a speech at a leading think-tank in the afternoon.

The plan is expected to emphasise India’s importance for the Indo-Pacific. Having the prestigious Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore in June last year, PM Kishida said he would lay out the strategy for Indo-Pacific next spring.
