Rishi Sunak to seek guidance from his ethics adviser regarding Suella Braverman

Rishi Sunak will subsequently confer with his ethics adviser regarding Suella Braverman’s handling of a speeding offence.

The home secretary aimed advice via civil servants and an associate regarding organising a private speed awareness course while attorney general in 2022.

Rishi Sunak will seek advice from the ethics adviser for Suella Braverman:

A government authority has refused her actions to break the ministerial regulation.

Labour head Sir Keir Starmer said the prime minister should call his adviser, Sir Laurie Magnus, to analyse whether laws were broken.

Talking to BBC Breakfast, Sir Keir said it looked like “improper action took place” from the home secretary that “ought to be fully probed”. “The usual outcome of violating the ministerial code is that you’ll go,” he continued.

Labour’s deputy head Angela Rayner even called on the prime minister to “show some backbone” and call Sir Laurie to “get to the root of this episode”.

As he returns, Mr Sunak, who visited Japan for the G7 meeting, will talk to his ethics adviser. Sir Laurie can only probe a minister once the prime minister grants approval for it to proceed.

The Liberal Democrats were even asking for an inquiry and said Mr Sunak was required to make a statement in Parliament regarding the claims. Meanwhile, Mrs Braverman is expected in the Commons on Monday for Home Office inquiries.

She was seen speeding last summer and faced three points on her licence and a penalty or a course as part of a party. The home secretary is under investigation, not over the speeding violation itself, but over whether she acted appropriately in trying to organise a one-to-one awareness course.

A country source told the BBC the senior minister had been “concerned” regarding her insurance premiums and preferred doing a course.
