Ajon Singh on myth, justice, and creative transformation.

Ajon Singh, the Indian‑origin writer making his feature debut with Primetime, is thrilled by the acclaim surrounding Robert Pattinson’s performance and the growing awards chatter. Singh hopes the actor finally secures his first Oscar nomination, noting that Pattinson’s career has long balanced independent films with major studio projects yet has never been recognized by the Academy.

Interestingly, Pattinson initially joined the project as a producer rather than its lead. Singh recalls struggling to find backers due to the film’s controversial subject matter, making Pattinson’s support invaluable. A turning point came during a late‑night dinner with Singh, director Lance Oppenheim, and Pattinson’s producing partner. Pattinson began reciting lines and discussing Chris Hansen’s podcast, prompting Singh to rework the script specifically for his voice. Soon after, Pattinson agreed to take on the role.

His casting reshaped the film’s creative vision. What began as a political thriller evolved into a mythological drama, portraying Hansen as an almost celestial figure- an “angel of punishment.” Singh explains that the team wanted to avoid mimicry or documentary‑style realism and instead craft a heightened, symbolic narrative that dramatizes Hansen’s cultural impact.

Central to Singh’s approach was refusing to depict Hansen as a simple villain. He argues that the show resonated because audiences were frustrated with elites escaping accountability, while Hansen consistently delivered justice. Compared to today’s aggressive online vigilantes, Singh suggests Hansen appears restrained, making him a more complex figure.

Singh emphasizes that Primetime is not about recreating reality but about exploring the cultural moment through a mythic lens. Extensive research grounded the story, but the goal was to elevate Hansen’s presence into something larger than life. “We wanted to show a complicated person,” Singh explains, highlighting Hansen’s multifaceted role in popular culture.

Beyond awards speculation, Singh has been moved by the warm reception from Indian audiences since the film’s September 25, 2026 release through PVR INOX Pictures and Lionsgate Play. Viewers have shared personal messages and photographs, making the experience feel deeply rewarding.

For Singh, the journey is about more than accolades- it is about presenting Hansen as a layered character and celebrating Pattinson’s transformative performance. Whether or not the Academy responds, Primetime has already sparked conversation about justice, myth, and the power of storytelling.
