Air attack sirens have been heard across Ukraine after Russia launched a new wave of missile and drone strikes on cities nationwide.

Blasts were heard in Ukraine’s city of Kyiv, where the capital’s mayor said falling remains from downed drones had hurt five people.

Explosions also hit Kharkiv, Kherson, Odesa and Mykolaiv, officials confirmed. It marks the fourth invasion in eight days on Kyiv and only 24 hours before Russia marks Victory Day.

The annual holiday celebrates Russia’s win over Nazi Germany during World War Two, a war the Kremlin has baselessly tried to attract parallels to since launching its attack on Ukraine last year.

The Ukrainian army said Monday morning’s attacks – which lasted around four hours and were launched soon after midnight – saw 16 rockets fired at targets across the nation.

It stated 61 airstrikes and 52 missile salvos were also launched at cities and military positions. Officers added that several 35 Iranian-made Shahed kamikaze drones had been hit down.

In Kyiv, emergency assistance responded after drone destruction fell on a runway at Zhuliany international terminal – one of the city’s two commercial airports – Kyiv’s army administration confirmed.

And nationals were injured after drone remains hit a residential tower in the central Shevchenkivskyi district, the administration said. In Odesa’s Black Sea harbour city, a warehouse was set burning in the attacks.

In photographs shared on social media by Serhiy Bratchuk, a representative for the Odesa military administration, flames could be seen destroying the building, which he identified as food storage.
