SC quashes plea demanding postponed of JEE Main, NEET 2020.

The Supreme Court dismissed the plea of postponing the exams and said that the entrance exams will be held as per schedule.

On a Monday, the Supreme Court of India quashed a plea seeking postponement of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). The top court said that postponing the exams will jeopardize students’ careers. The apex court, while dismissing the petition, took note of assurance by the authorities that the examinations will e held with proper safety measures and social distancing norms.

JEE Main will be held from 1 to 6 September; NEET on 13th September:

The entrance exams will be held per schedule, i.e. the JEE Main will be held from September 1 to 6, while NEET will be held on 13th September, and JEE Advanced on 27th September. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, these exams were postponed twice this year, and students were demanding a further delay.

Lack of examination centres, floods, the spike in COVID-19 cases, were the reasons for seeking the postponement of JEE Main and NEET:

11 students belonging to 11 states, filed the plea in the hope of a deferment of the July 3 notices issued by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The plea was filed through Advocate Alakh Alok Srivastava, who sought a direction to the authorities to increase the number of exams centres, and also conduct the exams only after normalcy is restored, post the pandemic. The plea also alleged that the concerned authorities have ignored the plight of lakhs of students from Assam, Bihar, and northeastern states, which are fighting the battle against Coronavirus and also are affected by the floods, which might not help them in appearing for the exams from such places.

Over 9 lakh students had applied for the JEE Main, and nearly 16 lakh registered to appear for NEET 2020.
