In ensuring rapid shipment of agricultural products across the country, Kisan Rail seems to have been a game-changer.
The first ‘multi-commodity’ Kisan Rail service was introduced by Tomar via video conference on August 7.
The launching of the 100th Kisan Rail arrives a day before the sixth round of talks among the government and the farmers.
At 4:30 pm on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will practically flag off the 100th ‘Kisan Rail’ service. This arrives on a day when demonstrations entered day 33 towards the three controversial agricultural laws of the Centre.
Narendra Singh Tomar, Minister of Agriculture of the Union, as well as Piyush Goyal, Minister of Railway, two of the three central ministers who represented the Centre in their talks with the Farmers’ Unions, will also be available on occasion.
The PMO in his Saturday statement:
In ensuring rapid shipment of agricultural products across the country, Kisan Rail seems to have been a game-changer. It ensures a seamless supply chain of perishable goods, noted the Offices of the Prime Minister (PMO) in a declaration on Saturday.
The 100th ‘Kisan Train’ will run through Sangola in Maharashtra as well as Shalimar in West Bengal, and vegetables such as chillies, onions, cauliflower, capsicum, cabbage, drumsticks, and fruits such as bananas, custard apples, grapes, oranges, pomegranate, etc., will be carried by the PMO announcement.
The first Kisan Rail was introduced by Tomar:
The first ‘multi-commodity’ Kisan Rail service was introduced by Tomar via video conference on August 7. The service was started in Bihar between Maharashtra’s Devlali as well as Danapur and was later extended following a strong response to Muzaffarpur throughout the eastern state.
Also, instead of the original three times a week frequency, it was turned into a weekly service. The Kisan Train service has shipped 27,000 tonnes of agro-services since its operation. A 50 per cent subsidy on the transport of fruits and vegetables was also extended by the Center.
Launch of Kisan Rail a day before 6th round of talk:
The launching of the 100th Kisan Rail arrives a day before the sixth round of talks among the government as well as the farmers’ unions are expected to take place.
On Saturday, the unions suggested that the discussions take place at 11 a.m. on 29 December, in addition to an invitation from the government to hold a discussion at the time and date of their choice. The unions had previously refused the initial proposal by the government in this regard. Five previous rounds of talks have failed to crack the stalemate between the two sides, comprising one each on 1, 3 & 5 December.
