Vijay Calls for NEET Abolition, Slams Gandhi Detention

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay has weighed in on the ongoing students’ protests in Delhi, renewing his call for the complete abolition of the NEET examination. He also strongly criticised the detention of Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and several other Opposition leaders, describing the Centre’s action as being at odds with democratic values.

Vijay Condemns Detention of Opposition Leaders

In a statement posted on X, originally written in Tamil, Vijay condemned the detention of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi along with other leaders who had stepped forward to support students protesting against alleged irregularities in the NEET exam. He termed their arrest undemocratic and called the Centre’s actions condemnable. Gandhi had been taken into brief, preventive custody after a sit-in protest near the Prime Minister’s residence in New Delhi before being released. Push for Education Reform and State Autonomy

Reiterating his party’s long-held stance, Vijay insisted that NEET-related irregularities have adversely affected students, and that scrapping the exam remains the only lasting solution. He proposed that education be moved back to the State List, giving states greater control over such matters. As an interim measure, he suggested the creation of a Special Concurrent List that would grant states more authority over medical examinations until larger constitutional changes could be made.

Vijay also confirmed that TVK would extend its support to the Opposition’s protest within Parliament over the police action against students. His remarks come as the student-led protests, driven by concerns over exam irregularities, continue to escalate nationally, drawing in political leaders and public figures alike.
