Kohli 59 Runs From Historic 15,000 ODI Milestone

Virat Kohli is set to walk out for Team India on Sunday, September 27, in the series opener against West Indies with a rare piece of cricketing history within touching distance. The 314-match veteran needs only 59 runs to become the second batter ever, after Sachin Tendulkar, to cross the 15,000-run mark in One Day Internationals.

Chasing Tendulkar’s Legacy

Kohli currently stands at 14,941 ODI runs, a tally built with 54 centuries and 79 half-centuries at an average of 58.59. Tendulkar, the format’s all-time leading run-getter, retired with 18,426 runs from 463 matches between 1989 and 2012. While Kohli remains some distance from that overall total, reaching 15,000 runs would place him in a club of exactly two, well ahead of the next names on the list — Kumar Sangakkara (14,234) and Ricky Ponting (13,704).

Multiple Milestones on the Cards

The West Indies series offers Kohli more than one record to chase. A score of 150 runs across the series would take his tally against the Caribbean side past 4,000 international runs, a milestone only Jacques Kallis has previously achieved against any single opponent; Kohli already has 3,850 runs from 73 matches against West Indies. Closer to home, he also sits within reach of Tendulkar’s record for the most ODI runs scored on Indian soil — Kohli has 6,867 runs from 130 home matches and needs 110 more to overtake Tendulkar’s 6,976, with 133 runs enough to breach the 7,000-run mark altogether.

With the bat in ominous form and history well within range, Kohli’s outing at the top of the order on Sunday could turn into one of the defining innings of his ODI career.
